Dr Mehta is a global leader in retinal research.

He is an Associate Professor at the University of Sydney, aiming to improve outcomes of currently available intravitreal injection therapies. His research at Sydney Eye Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital contributed to his Doctorate of Medicine on “Novel endpoints in diabetic retinopathy clinical trials” registered at Cambridge University. He offers clinical trials of new therapies for macula disease.

Clinical trials

Hemal Mehta has been involved in designing and conducting clinical trials of new longer lasting intravitreal injection therapies for macula disease that will soon be available to the public. Dr Mehta is co-director of clinical trials research at Strathfield Retina Clinic. He has been principal investigator or sub-investigator on over 50 retinal clinical trials. He previously led the clinical trials unit at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, recruiting the first patient in Europe to the PANOPTICA study, the first eyedrop for wet age-related macular degeneration to show promise in early phase clinical trials. He was involved in the seminal investigator-initiated BEVORDEX clinical trial at Sydney Eye Hospital and analysis of this unique dataset contributed to his higher research degree titled “Novel endpoints in diabetic retinopathy clinical trials”.

Optimising intravitreal injection outcomes

Hemal Mehta is an Associate Professor at the University of Sydney’s Save Sight Registries. He is on the Steering Committee of the Fight Retinal Blindness! (FRB!) registry. The FRB! registry enables clinicians to track outcomes of interventions such as intravitreal therapy for age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. By analysing this anonymised big data, we can better understand how to optimise treatments to improve patient outcomes. Dr Mehta was awarded the Australian Vision Research RANZCO Primer Grant to support research on linking imaging to the FRB! registry to improve understanding of progression of age-related macular degeneration.

Building on the success of the FRB! registry in Australia, the use of this audit tool is now expanding globally. Dr Mehta is facilitating this international collaboration through his roles as an advisor for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists national age-related macular degeneration audit, Honorary Ophthalmology Consultant at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, and ophthalmology clinical advisor for Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR®).
